Light bars have come a long way since the 1980’s, when the best you could find was old-style halogen lights that you could bolt to your bumper, brush guard or roll bar. At BIGTEX Tires & Offroad, we can still get you the old-school halogens for your ride, but the trend is definitely toward LED light bars.

For off-roaders, construction workers, ranchers, hunters and all those who like to go offroad and actually get their rigs dirty, LED setups just make good sense.

LED vs. Halogen

• One of the chief advantages of LED lighting for offroad is that LEDs use much less energy, as much as 75% less. That means a lower current draw on your vehicle’s electrical system, and a much longer service life. Halogen bulbs are generally rated for around 6,000 hours of life, while LEDs may last more than five times that long.
• The compact size of LEDs means they can be configured in all sorts of ways, from simple 3- or 9-light setups to multiple rows of hundreds of LEDs for a wide floodlight-like field of illumination.
• The color temperature of LED lights tends to be much cooler than halogen, resulting in a bright white light that’s brighter than daylight itself.

HID vs. Halogen

• Xenon lights, also known as high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting, produce a light that’s brighter than halogen, while generating much less heat. They also use less energy and tend to last longer than halogen lamps, but the blue-white light they produce is bright enough to be a nuisance to other drivers.
